All rise
by Kristine Ong Muslim
1.
There's a blind fish in every aquarium
waiting for its turn to be scooped by a hand
away from its water. The fish bowl breeds
bored, suicidal creatures. I leave the fish alone.
Their tiny gasping deaths will not bring me pleasure.
2.
Each system of inherent darkness has a roommate.
Now there's my unshaken death star under the sink.
Here's a pan held over the stovetop burner.
Here's a synonym for love.
3.
Have you found at last
the house which you have always wanted to burn?
Its fence is painted the wrong shade of yellow.
Its window glass has been recently dusted.
The key to its front door is under the welcome mat.
